Pratyush - India's fastest Supercomputer

Union Minister for Science and Technology Harsh Vardhan on 8th January 2018 dedicated India’s fastest and first ‘multi-petaflops’ supercomputer Pratyush to the nation at Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune. Christened ‘Pratyush’, meaning the sun, the High Performance Computing (HPC) facility has been established at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune, and will be a national facility for improving weather and climate forecasts, an IITM release said. While inaugurating the facility, the minister said that it would be India’s number one HPC facility in terms of peak capacity and performance.
Pratyush has 6.8 PF computational power installed at two MoES Institutes. 4.0 Peta Flops HPC facility at IITM, Pune and 2.8 Peta Flops facility at NCMRWF, Noida. (PF is a measure of a computer’s processing speed). Pratyush is fourth fastest supercomputer in world dedicated for weather and climate research. It follows supercomputing machines in Japan, US and United Kingdom. It will improve rankings of Indian supercomputer from 300s to 30s in Top500 list, a respected international tracker of the world’s fastest supercomputers. The key function of the High Performance Computing (HPC) facility will be monsoon forecasting using dynamical model which requires simulating weather for given month and letting custom-built model calculate impact of actual weather over coming months. It will enable to map regions in India at resolution of 3 km and globe at 12 km.

Praksh Javadekar launched PARAM-ISHAN supercomputer at IIT, Guwahati

Union Human Resource Development Minister Shri Praksh Javadekar launched PARAM-ISHAN supercomputing facility at IIT, Guwahati on 19th September, 2016. “It is a one of the glad moment to have fastest and most powerful computer in northeastern, eastern and southern regions” he said after launching the PARAM-ISHAN super computer.
The IITs are modern temples for development and we reiterated our commitment to give a big push to research and innovations by empowering the educational institutes to transform into higher seats of learning and platforms for advanced research. A nations’ potential for growth today, is evaluated on the quality of its research and development. He also expressed that, C-DAC and IIT Guwahati is a strategic move that will provide a boost to both the HPC users and the community through the deployed PARAM-ISHAN and several technology areas will be positively affected through the introduction of the new Supercomputer.
Prof. Gautam Biswas, Director, IIT Guwahati said that PARAM-ISHAN have power of 250 Teraflops and three hundred tera bites capacity and this will not only augment the research initiatives in the Institute, but also help in creating an ecosystem for attracting right talents to the field of research. He also opinioned that, happy to have partnership with C-DAC on this initiative, they have proved themselves in the field and we look forward to collaborate further on new and emerging areas of science. PARAM-ISHAN can be used in the application areas like Computational Chemistry, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Computational Electromagnetic, Civil Engineering Structures, Nana-block Self Assemble, Optimization etc. North East India receives heavy rainfall during monsoon, which leads to flooding and landslides. PARAM-ISHAN can be used for Weather, climate modeling and seismic data processing.

India's first computer installed ?

India's first computer installed: First Computer in india is installed at Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Kolkata in 1995, it was the first in Asia, outside Japan. DDM lights up a Wills Navy Cut cigarette and adds that ISI had the distinction of developing the first Indian analog computer as well. Nehru came to meet the computer that solved a 10 x 10 single precision matrix in 90 minutes
Indian Statistical Institute is the first institute:
-  in Asia to acquire a digital computer.
- in India to participate in successfully building an indigenous digital computer.

About ISI Kolkata: Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), a unique P. C. Mahalanobish institution devoted to the research, teaching and application of statistics, natural sciences and social sciences. Founded by Professor P.C. Mahalanobis in Kolkata on 17th December, 1931, the institute gained the status of an Institution of National Importance by an act of the Indian Parliament in 1959. The Headquarters of ISI is located in the northern fringe of the metropolis of Kolkata.
